The 40th season of Monday Night Football will kick off on ESPN with a
doubleheader Monday, Sept. 14 – previously announced Buffalo Bills at
New England Patriots (7 p.m. ET) and San Diego Chargers at Oakland
Raiders (10:15 p.m.) and will continue with a total of 17 primetime
games.
ESPN’s schedule will feature all 12 playoff teams from 2008,
including both the defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers and NFC champion Arizona Cardinals, making for some intriguing match-ups.
In recent years, Monday Night Football switched to ESPN. While it may
not have quite the lustre it did back when Howard Cosell and Don
Meredith were in the booth, Monday Night Football is still a TV event
that many Americans highlight on their calendar.
Originally airing on the ABC network from 1970 to 2005, Monday Night
Football was the second longest running prime time show on American
broadcast network television (after CBS' 60 Minutes) and one of the
highest-rated, particularly among male viewers. ABC aired a total of 555
Monday night games. Monday Night Football moved to the ESPN cable
network in 2006, ending a 36-year run on ABC.
